The City of Santa Monica Uses California Law to Prohibit Green Deceptive Marketing by Dry Cleaners

In 2009, the Head of Environmental Services for the City of Santa Monica invites Dr. Sinsheimer and Mr. Kim to testify to the Santa Monica City Council concerning the human health and environmental benefits of Professional Wet Cleaning compared with other dry clean solvent technologies.  In 2013, the Santa Monica City Attorney enforces California State Truth-in-Advertising Law requiring businesses to provide evidence supporting marketing claims.   Six Santa Monica dry cleaners, five hydrocarbon cleaners and one GreenEarth cleaner, are unable to provide evidence supporting their green marketing claims – including using the words “non-toxic”, “safe”, and “environmentally friendly.”  As a remedy, each of the cleaners agree to refrain from adverting their services as green.
